Lenswise Privacy Policy

Lenswise is a photography app that recommends manual camera settings for the phone you are holding, in the light you are standing in. This policy explains what happens to information about you when you use it.

Lenswise is made by Hamza Anas, an independent developer in Australia. You can reach me at hello@getlenswise.com. In this policy, “I”, “me” and “we” mean the developer.

This policy covers the Android and iOS versions of Lenswise.

The short version

• Most of what Lenswise does stays on your phone. There are no accounts, and you never type your name or email into the app.
• A few things leave your phone, each for a specific reason:
  • your approximate location (to within about 3 km) goes to a weather service, for the forecast;
  • subscription information goes through Google Play or the App Store, and a subscription service called RevenueCat;
  • usage statistics go to an analytics service called PostHog, so I can understand how Lenswise is used and where people run into problems.
• No advertising. Lenswise has no ads, does not sell your information, and does not use advertising identifiers.
• Your photos are yours. The app measures light through the camera. It does not save photos, and it never uploads any image.

1. Information stored on your phone

Lenswise keeps the following in its own private storage on your phone:

• whether you have finished the introduction, and the choices you made during it;
• a history of your recent analyses: the recipe, the settings recommended, the sky and weather readings used, and your phone’s make, model, Android version and camera capabilities. For the most recent analyses it also keeps a coarse brightness map of the scene: a grid of brightness numbers, not a photograph (no colour, no detail, no image);
• your reminder choices, and when a reminder you asked for is due;
• your subscription status as your app store last reported it (such as your plan and when it renews or ends), so the app can unlock and show your status in Settings;
• the random identifiers used by the subscription and statistics services in sections 4 and 5, and any information they have not sent yet.

This stays on your phone. It is deleted when you uninstall Lenswise or clear its data. If your phone’s backup service is turned on, your phone may include this data in its backup, under your backup provider’s terms.

The camera. Lenswise reads frames from your camera to measure the light, keeps the measurements and the brightness map described above, and discards the frames.

2. Permissions

Lenswise does not ask for location in the background, and does not ask for your contacts, microphone, photos or files. You can change any permission at any time in your phone’s settings.

3. Location and weather: MET Norway

If you allow location, Lenswise asks the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET Norway) for the weather forecast where you are, using its public weather service. The request includes:

• your latitude and longitude, rounded to a grid of about 3 km — roughly suburb level, which is as precise as a forecast needs to be;
• the app’s name and version, its website address and a contact email address, which MET Norway asks every app to send;
• your phone’s IP address, as with any internet request.

At the time of writing, MET Norway’s terms say it keeps request logs, including IP addresses and coordinates, in its own data centre in Norway. Its terms are at https://api.met.no/doc/TermsOfService. Lenswise does not send your location anywhere else.

Weather data in Lenswise is based on data from MET Norway, licensed under the Norwegian Licence for Open Government Data (NLOD) 2.0 and Creative Commons BY 4.0.

4. Subscriptions: Google Play, the App Store and RevenueCat

Payments are handled by Google Play on Android and by Apple’s App Store on iOS. They process your payment and send your receipt, under their own terms and privacy policies. Lenswise does not collect your payment details, your Google or Apple account name, or your email address, and I do not use any such details your app store may show me except to handle your purchase or a request from you.

RevenueCat (RevenueCat, Inc., USA) is a service that manages subscriptions for me: it shows prices and checks whether your subscription is active. RevenueCat may receive the following when the app checks your subscription (which it does regularly, including automatically checking your app-store account for an existing Lenswise subscription), when it loads prices (which happens for everyone during the introduction, whether or not they subscribe), and when you buy or restore:

• a random identifier created by RevenueCat on your phone. It is not your Google or Apple account, not your email, and not a device serial number;
• your phone’s make, model and operating-system version, its language and app-store country, and the app version;
• your IP address, from which RevenueCat may estimate an approximate location such as your city or region;
• the purchase details your app store holds for Lenswise (such as the product, price, currency and order or transaction number).

5. Usage statistics: PostHog

To understand how Lenswise is used and where people run into problems, the app sends usage statistics to PostHog (PostHog, Inc., USA). PostHog is configured to store them in its European Union data centre (Frankfurt, Germany). They are tied to a random identifier, not to who you are.

What is sent:

• the steps you reach in the app (for example, a step of the introduction or a recipe screen) and the choices you make (for example, a plan you pick, a reminder you accept, a permission you allow or decline);
• for each analysis: the recipe, the settings recommended, whether those reached your camera’s limits, the lens, whether a filter was suggested, the verdict and the conditions working against the shot, how long it took, and, if it failed, the kind of failure;
• other failures, as a type only (for example, that the weather could not be loaded);
• your subscription status (for example, trial or paid), never payment details;
• information about the phone and app: operating system and version, phone make and model, device type, whether it is an emulator, app name, package, version and build, screen size, language and time-zone settings, the analytics library version, and the time of each event; and when the app is installed, updated, opened or sent to the background;
• a random identifier created by PostHog on your phone the first time the app runs, and a session identifier. They are not your account, email, device serial number or advertising identifier, and I do not connect them to you or to RevenueCat’s identifier.

What is not sent: photos or camera frames, your location or coordinates, the sun, moon and sky readings, anything you type, the content of any email, and your name.

PostHog receives your IP address when the statistics arrive, as with any internet request. Lenswise turns off PostHog’s location lookup, and my PostHog project is configured to discard IP addresses instead of storing them.

PostHog keeps the statistics for the retention period of my plan (currently one year) and processes them on my behalf. They are not used for advertising.

Clearing the app’s data creates a new random identifier. Uninstalling usually does too, but if your phone’s backup restores the app’s data when you reinstall, the previous identifier may be restored with it.

6. Emails you choose to send

Send feedback (in Settings) opens your own email app with a message addressed to me. It includes the app version and your phone model.

Send a report (after a failed analysis) and Something went wrong? (on a result) do the same and attach the record of that analysis as a small file. It contains the same information as the history described in section 1: the recipe, the settings recommended, the weather and sky readings, your phone’s make, model, system version and camera capabilities, the time of the analysis and, if kept, the coarse brightness map. It is never a photograph and contains no GPS coordinates, although the sky readings together with the time can indicate roughly where you were.

If your phone has no email app set up, Lenswise opens your phone’s share menu instead, and you choose where the message or file goes. Nothing is sent until you choose to send it, and you can read, change or delete it first. If you send it, I receive your email address and what you wrote, and use them only to reply to you and to fix problems. Email to hello@getlenswise.com is forwarded to my Gmail inbox by Cloudflare’s email routing service. Emails are kept for as long as they are needed for that and as a record of the conversation, and you can ask me to delete them at any time.

7. What Lenswise does not do

• It does not sell or rent your information, or share it for advertising.
• It does not show ads or use advertising identifiers.
• It does not upload photos or anything from your camera.
• It does not ask for your name, email address, phone number or contacts.
• It has no user accounts.

8. Who receives information, and where

Some of these services are in other countries, so your information may be handled outside the country you live in. Each service handles information under its own terms and privacy policy.

Most of your information is on your phone, where you control it: you can turn off location or notifications in your phone’s settings, clear the app’s data, or uninstall the app.

You can email hello@getlenswise.com to ask what information I hold about you, to correct or delete it, or for a copy of it. Depending on where you live, you may also have other rights under local law, and the right to complain to your local privacy regulator.

• Subscription records: because the app does not show RevenueCat’s random identifier, include the order number from the receipt your app store emailed you, so the record can be found and deleted.
• Usage statistics: these are tied only to a random identifier that the app does not show you and that I cannot link to you, so I cannot find the statistics that came from your phone. They are deleted automatically at the end of the retention period.

11. Children

Lenswise is a tool for photographers and is not directed at children. I do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has sent me information, email me and I will delete it.

12. Security

Lenswise sends information over encrypted connections (HTTPS) and keeps its data in storage that your phone reserves for the app. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, but I use reasonable measures to protect the information I hold.

13. The Lenswise website

This policy also covers getlenswise.com. The website has no accounts, forms, analytics, advertising or tracking cookies. It is hosted by Cloudflare, which receives your IP address and browser details when you visit, as with any website, to deliver the pages and protect the site from abuse. Cloudflare’s privacy policy is at https://www.cloudflare.com/privacypolicy/.

14. Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the effective date at the top will change. If a change means more information leaves your phone than this version describes, I will tell you in the app or on the store listing before the change takes effect.
